“Dudes At Home” is a feature-length documentary video about men who live alone. White, straight, American, middle-class, financially sound, college educated, able-bodied men. The men are well-off enough to live alone and are presumably skilled and successful in some parts of their lives. The video, however, only focuses on what these men do in their domestic space. Through cross-cutting between the thirteen men interviewed, it winds through different themes, somewhat reflecting the house tour that the men gave. Stereotypes like dirty dishes and unmade beds appear, of course, but not from everyone interviewed. These are individuals with differing levels of ability and desire to make a home. The video explores the limits of the stereotypes of the bachelor pad and when these men run up against the limits of their male identity as seen through their domestic spaces.
