Google Fiber is expanding to these Nashville neighborhoods

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described AT&T's price for fiber internet. For 1,000 megabit-per-second speed, the initial monthly cost is $70 to $80.

Google Fiber service has expanded to several Nashville neighborhoods, offering ultra-fast internet to more residents.

Single-family homes in Midtown, Edgehill, Sylvan Heights, Acklen Park, Music Row, Hillsboro Village, West End/Vanderbilt and East Nashville now have access to Google Fiber. The service has already been available in Sylvan Park and Charlotte Park, along with 30 apartment and condominium buildings downtown, in Germantown, Midtown, East Nashville and the Gulch.

Google Fiber was installed at a Sylvan Park home.

“We’ve made significant progress on our network,” said Martha Ivester, who leads Google Fiber's Nashville operations.

While Comcast and AT&T have been able to beat Google Fiber to many Nashville neighborhoods with gigabit speed internet, Google Fiber seeks to distinguish itself with strong customer service. Google Fiber does not cap its data, does not lock customers into annual contracts, does not charge for installation, and advertises a customer service model in which installation crews arrive at the time of the appointment.

“We really try to be a different internet company,” Ivester said.

To encourage adoption, Google Fiber is offering a “community bonus” in Nashville to new and existing service neighborhoods. The system means that the more people who sign up, the lower a bill drops. The bonus will be in place through Dec. 14, at which point lowered rates will be locked in through 2019. Ivester said it is possible that customers could save more than $100 in a year. Existing customers will see bills drop by $1 to start with.

While Google has ended TV service in some markets, it will continue to offer it in Nashville, with more than 200 channels available, Ivester said. Internet service and TV service costs $160 a month.

Residents can sign up at google.com/fiber/nashville, at which point Google Fiber will place a network interface unit box on their home. Those residents will then schedule an installation.
