An 18-year-old man carrying an AK-47 was arrested Friday after a pursuit throughout East Nashville that included a helicopter and a SWAT team.

Police say Robert L. Johnson was taken into jail Saturday after authorities initially responded to reports of a stolen vehicle.

While Johnson was allegedly behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle, he ignored officers' efforts to stop him, jumping a curb and speeding away. As he fled, a police helicopter monitored Johnson heading north on Ellington Parkway before he crashed into a utility pole on Briarville Rd.

Police say Johnson, who was carrying an AK-47 rifle, walked to a nearby gas station and carjacked another vehicle.

Authorities continued to follow Johnson to Charter Village Apartments in Madison, where he allegedly entered an apartment, with residents of the unit safely exiting.

Johnson finally surrendered after members of the SWAT team responded to the apartment.

Johnson was charged with robbery/carjacking, felony evading arrest, two counts of auto burglary, aggravated criminal trespassing and four counts of violating his probation.

Police expect Johnson, who is being held in lieu of $87,500 bond, to face additional charges.
