Suspect in Auburn shooting that killed one police officer, injured two others in custody

A suspect is in custody following a manhunt in Alabama after an Auburn police officer was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting Sunday night. 

Authorities say suspect Grady Wayne Wilkes, 29, was armed and was seen last wearing camouflage body armor and a helmet. The State of Alabama issued an "Emergency BLUE Alert,"  which is issued when officers are killed or wounded, in the wake of the Wilkes' escape. 

The alert was canceled just before 8 a.m. Monday when Wilkes was located by police, according to the State of Alabama.

On Sunday night, Alabama officers responded to a domestic disturbance at Arrowhead Park, a mobile home park in Auburn, Alabama. During the police response, Wilkes began to shoot at the officers, according to police. 

A manhunt  is underway for Grady Wayne Wilkes, 29, after police say he shot and killed one officer and wounded two others.

Bill Harris, the Lee County coroner, stated an officer was taken from the scene and later died in an emergency room. Two other Alabama police were wounded in the encounter but are expected to recover. 

The Auburn University Alert Center said police reported the suspect was in custody just before 8 a.m. Monday. 

Auburn Police Chief Paul Register said that there was no evidence that the 911 call that brought officers to the scene was fake. 

Opelika-Auburn News reports say that helicopters were patrolling the area, and a command center for law enforcement had been set up at Auburn University. 

Auburn University gave an all clear statement after police reported Wilkes was in custody.
