This 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL is one of 169 examples built during 14 months of first-series production, and was completed on February 25, 1972. The car was delivered new in Italy in July 1972 and is believed to have been imported to the US later in the 1970s. It was acquired in 1986 by a Colorado collector, who commissioned a refurbishment in the mid-1990s that included a repaint in black and installing a 3.5-liter M30 inline-six with twin Weber carburetors. The car remained in the care of the same owner’s family until 2014, when it was acquired by a San Francisco collector. Subsequent modifications included installation of a Getrag five-speed manual transmission and “Batmobile” aerodynamic features. After being acquired by the selling dealer, this E9 CSL completed the Raduno Classico rally in Austin, Texas in December 2019. It is now offered as part of DriverSource’s lineup of three early-1970s sports cars currently being auctioned on BaT and is accompanied by its original engine block, a letter from BMW Classic, service records, and a clean Texas title.

The CSL was developed by BMW’s competition division as a homologation model for European touring car competition, and entered production in May 1971. Weight-saving measures differentiating the “L” model from standard E9 variants include an aluminum hood, doors, and trunk lid, as well as a plastic rear bumper, Perspex rear and side windows, and thinner-gauge steel panels.

This example left the factory finished in Golf yellow and was repainted black during the 1990s refurbishment, which was carried out under the supervision of Paul Schultz in Denver, with parts and advice supplied by marque specialists Carl Nelson and Richard Conway. Tri-color side stripes were also added at that time. Closeups in the photo gallery below show the finish and trim, as well as Resartglas etchings on the Perspex windows.

This car has been fitted with a Batmobile-style rear wing and roof spoiler, along with rubber air guides on the front fenders and a front air dam. A later-style steel trunk panel with a plastic lip was also added, though the factory aluminum panel is included in the sale and shown in the gallery below. Factory 14” Alpina alloy wheels wear 205/70 Michelin XWX tires that were mounted by the seller in 2019.

Front and rear Scheel bucket seats are trimmed in black leatherette with corduroy inserts. The CSL model utilized minimal sound-proofing and thinner carpeting, and this car has been fitted with a set of custom silver and black Coco mats. The trunk compartment houses a matching Alpina spare wheel along with a jack and tire iron.

VDO instrumentation is situated in a wood dash surround and includes a 240-km/h speedometer and 8k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 93k kilometers (~58k miles), about 900 of which have been added by the selling dealer.

The 3.5-liter M30B34 inline-six (#1287639) is said to be from a 1985 BMW and was installed during the 1990s refurbishment along with a pair of dual-choke Weber carburetors. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 245/10 C/R dogleg five-speed manual transmission, which was installed in November 2018. Fluid and filter changes were performed by the seller in late 2019 prior to the Raduno Classico, along with dynamometer tuning. Results of a compression test performed by the seller are shown in the gallery below, reflecting around 170 psi for each cylinder.

The suspension system features McPherson struts up front and semi-trailing arms out back, with Bilstein gas-pressurized shocks and higher-rate rear springs added for CSL models. Stopping is handled by discs all around, and new brake hoses were fitted in late 2019.
